Bushmills #3 Char Bourbon Cask

I always question "bourbon cask" finished as a feature of any whisky as most Scotch and Irish is matured in Bourbon casks.  It is like saying a "metal car" or a "terrible Brexit plan"; it's a  bit redundant.  Bushmills have highlghted the #3 char of oak casks used (meaning a few seconds less exposure to fire than the more common #4) as the USP of this expression.  The nose is malty with banana, vanilla and milk chocolate.  The taste also has malt and nuts, lemon citrus peel and sweet peanut brittle.  The finish is initially sugar coating on tongue with a spicy note of cinnamon and tamale hots candy at the end.  At end of the day it is another bourbon cask finished whisky and there is not much here that stands out so if you are in mood for no-age expression Bushmills (and why not) I would probably recommend Black Bush over this one.

    Where's the blog this week?

I am not going to be posting a blog entry this week (well... except this one).  Why?   I spent the weekend at the Victoria Whisky Festival and I am still a little overwhelmed from that experience and to be honest I haven't really been able to concentrate on a single entry or idea (and I have a business trip to prepare for this week).  Highlights included an eight whisky / whiskey master class from Jim Murray (see picture), an unbelievable chance to sample the Gordon and Macphail Glenlivet 70 year old, participating in another WhiskCast virtual tasting and meeting Mark Gillespie, Grant Stevely, Simon Brooking, Ashok Chokalingam and many others.  Oh and I have a Glenlivet Nights of Passage tasting event tonight.... still someone has to do it.

Ben Nevis 15 year old 1996

This is a 55.4% ABV cask strength bottling from the Ben Nevis distillery.  For the wkisky pedants my sample label said Cask 1652. The nose has raisins and other sweet, dried fruits.  I would guess Cask 1652 held sherry before whisky.  Lots or richness and tannins ot the point of being almost smoky.  The taste is equally full and bold, spice, nuts and toffee.  Bite of alchohol as well.  Finish not as long as I expected, but dry and spicy.  With water it gets a little smoother and sweeter with milk chocolate notes, and less dry with some mint in the finish.
