Highland Park Viking Honour 12 year old

The nose on this is salty and fruity, with some seaweed, a hint of rubber and a prick of alcohol even at 43% ABV.    The taste is rich with toffee, burnt coffee, caramel at first then some more acrid camp fire notes and along with bitter fruit peels and spices.  The finish is gentle hum of heat and peppermint along with some smokiness.  At 43% ABV it can take a drop of water and still hold up, but it doesn't need it.  Overall a delicious expression from one of my favourite distilleries.

    Where's the blog this week?

    I am not going to be posting a blog entry this week (well... except this one).  Why?   I spent the weekend at the Victoria Whisky Festival and I am still a little overwhelmed from that experience and to be honest I haven't really been able to concentrate on a single entry or idea (and I have a business trip to prepare for this week).  Highlights included an eight whisky / whiskey master class from Jim Murray (see picture), an unbelievable chance to sample the Gordon and Macphail Glenlivet 70 year old, participating in another WhiskCast virtual tasting and meeting Mark Gillespie, Grant Stevely, Simon Brooking, Ashok Chokalingam and many others.  Oh and I have a Glenlivet Nights of Passage tasting event tonight.... still someone has to do it.

    Random Whisky

    Highland Park 30 year old

    I rarely drink whiskies of this age so was not quite sure what to expect.  The nose was actually quite elusive and soft at first and alcohol was detectable (it is bottled at 48.1% ABV), then some smoke, sweetness, saltiness and finally a hint of citrus, oranges maybe.  The taste was more powerful than the nose, nothing elusive here, it set my mouth tingling with the first sip from the smoke, oak, spices and some salt.  With water it softened and then I could detect sweet caramel and vanilla before a smokey finish longer than scottish winter night.  A massive whisky, an after dinner treat or perhaps the last dram of the night (you may still taste it in the morning).
