Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof

Wild Turkey Rare Breed was one of the best bourbons I discovered while trying all the 101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die so iIwas very interested when I saw this 112 proof (or 56% ABV) expression in a Texas liquor store.  The nose was dominated by alcohol with sweet grainy notes of corn and rye and some butter.  The taste was oaky at first with caramel, vanilla and sweet brown sugar.  The finish was a little hot and spicy with grassy rye notes.  With a little water it became sweeter and mellow with some black pepper notes.

Every now and again a whisky comes along that is a nice surprise.  This was one of those whiskies for me.  The nose was very light and sweet, with fresh fruits, green grapes maybe.  The taste is also sweet, honeyed and malty and more fruit, a softer cirtus note like tangerine rather than lemon.  The finish has some heat and smoke and is quite dry.  Elegant and interesting, a nice all rounder, on the light side perhaps but robust enough to stand up to pairing with some food as well.  Reminds me a lot of Old Pulteney, interestingly both distilleries are in old ports but on opposites side of Scotland, and if you like one, my guess is you will like the other.
