Elijah Craig Small Batch

This "no age statement" expression replaced the 12 year old Elijah Craig in 2016.  The nose has vanilla, popcorn and toasted oak.  Oily and peppery on palate, a little honey but not as sweet as nose suggests. Not as balanced as I would like but a little water helped and brought up some caramel sweetness and apple tartness.

    Laphroaig 10 year old

Powerful and pungent nose.   Alcohol and peat in the nose, some salt, phenolic and fruity notes.  The taste is smooth and medium bodied, sweet at first, a flash of caramel and even vanilla notes but those quickly fade and spices, pepper and cinnanom, and peat smoke grow. The finish is dominated by the peat smoke and the classic medicinal and phenolic notes of Lahproaig.  At the right time and place this is great dram, but it not by any means an every day drink for me.  Not overly complex and I find a few rough edges in this one.  I think there are better more complex and rounded expressions of Laphroaig.
