Bellevoye Bleu

If you had not of heard of this French blended malt you are not alone, because it was new to me as well when I saw it in the Air France Lounge in Paris.  A little online research suggests this is a blend of 3 single malts of different regions of France and finished in new French oak casks.  It is bottled at 40% ABV but nosed like it was much stronger.  Very feisty and malty with barnyard, floral and even perfurmed notes in the nose.  Hot and sweet on the palate with some flashes of toffee which were quickly masked by pepper and even a slightly acrid smokey note.  The finish has some chilli heat with a hint of lemon peel marmalade.  A splash of water improves it greatly, smooths out the grainy mouth feel and brings out some more fruity and sweet flavours.  It is not bad but posseses little elegance or sophistication so in that respect it is not a very French French whisky.

    The final tasting from the Whisky Cast “white whiskey” virtual tasting I did in December 2011.  (If you are interested you can download the audio file from iTunes or www.whiskycast.com )   This is an unusual, possibly unique, whisky, aged for 10 years and then charcoal filtered until clear and aimed at the cocktail and mixology markets.    The nose has some alcohol, cooked apples and cotton candy.  Very sweet, floral and aromatic.  The taste at first was dominated by vanilla, almost vanilla extract, with a nice mouth feel.   The taste also had notes of corn, pine and with addition of water some oak and green wood notes came though.  When left for while a really strong coconut nose and taste developed as well.  Interesting stuff.  On the 1 to 5 scale of WhiskyCast I gave it a score of 2.5 and on my scale of 1 – 4 stars I gave it 2 stars, it is the only one of the three we tasted I would actually drink at party if offered.
