Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye

This was unexpectedly declared the “best whiskey in the world” in 2015 by Jim Murray and due to resulting “online hub-bub” (or as I call it OHB) I chose to stay away at that time and revisit this controversial whisky at a later date. I am glad I did because of the excellent price point it is really very good value. Made from a 90% rye mash bill the nose has lemon pledge, coffee, vanilla, toffee and even some floral notes. The taste is smooth and creamy, lots of the notes from nose with Wherther’s Original candy and milk chocolate. The finish has peppermint, some grassy herbal notes and a little oak.  The buttery creamy mouthfeel reminded me of The Macallan. Is it very good but I can’t say if it was the best in the world that year because I did not try them all.

Jefferson’s Presidential Reserve 21 year old

A wheated bourbon I was lucky enough to have tried recently at Reserve101 in Houston. The nose has lots of fresh paint for a 21 year old expression, and red fruits. Really delicious. The taste is creamy vanilla, strawberries and then spice comes through building into a finish of rich oak and pepper. Very fruity and sweet for an older bourbon. I tasted this late in the evening and I strongly suspect my notes aren’t doing it justice because I don’t see much similarity with other online notes. At end of day I just remember thinking this is fantastic.

I wrote in my recent review of Jefferson’s Bourbon; “Good but perhaps not balanced for MY personal palate but could completely understand if someone told me this was their favorite bourbon.” If someone told me Jefferson’s Presidential Reserve was their favorite bourbon…. I might agree with them.
