The Scotchcast might sound like a medical sticking tape but is in fact three guys who do whisky reviews. This was the first whisky podcast I listened too in 2009 and I used look forward to my monthly tasting with Chip, Michael and Jeff. I can't say I always agree with them, but as they don't always agree with each other I know I am in good company. Very focused on single malt scotch and unfortunately no more episodes are being produced, but website is still up and who knows…

Whisky Cast is the definitive whisky news podcast, the host Mark Gillespie and his show set a standard that few others reach, and I mean in all podcasts not just whisky related. I was introduced to the show via The Scotchcast, Mark was key in my learning that there is more to good whisky than Scotch single malt and my interest in blends, bourbon and other whisky is a direct result of listening to this show. I can't even begrudge Mark the ex-Houston Astros who now play for his Phillies.

Jim, in fact many times I don't, I have to admire his knowledge and passion, which I can't even begin to match. I had the pleasure of sharing a dram with Jim at a Whisky show in London once and I know I will again. The reason I even attended that show was his podcast on attending whisky events. His podcast... well it was unique but like The Scotchcast has also ceased regular trading. His website now has a broader arts focus but if you dig into it you can find some whisky stuff.

I learned about this website from the Malted Muse. At first I though the concept was crazy, a guy who collects movie clippings with scotch whisky in them. However, like a parasitic infection (and I mean that affectionately) this website burrowed into my psyche and thrived and I now find myself in the middle of movies like Wall Street II jumping up and shouting "Johnnie Walker Blue Label!". A classic example of the "where the hell did the last two hours go?" website.

I went school with Ding in England and by coincidence we both ended up marrying an american (fortunately not the same one), living in the USA and are now both blogging about our favorite drinks. In his case it is beer, and I can personally vouch for the fact he has drunk enough beer to be an authority on this subject. This site was another factor in my decision to start a blog (along with Ian Buxton's book) and I love Ding's honesty and commitment to what he believes, and my advice would be to stay off his lawn.

Gordon Muir, the Whisky Tutor, led a single malt tasting event I attended in July 2009 that was one of the major reasons I became more interested in single malt and scotch whisky. I am posting a link to his website in part as an acknowledgement of the importance of that event.

A great website that of course offers a tremendous range of whisky, ships to Texas, and goes to great care with packing to ensure you get your bottles intact. Of course it is not the only site that does that, but what marks this website out as special for me are the Whisky Blending Kits they offer (see blog….) and also the wide range of 3 cl samples they offer. I find the samples incredibly useful as I often taste whiskies at events, restaurants or bars which leave a great impression (I may even scribble down some notes in a notebook) but I am not in position to develop detailed notes. I also use them to remind myself of whiskies I have may have tasted in past but before I started taking detailed notes. I can now go online, order a sample, and follow up with detailed notes.

I have written plenty about this downtown Houston bar in various whisky notes and blogs. This is simply one of my favorites place to drink whisky in the world. Great owners, great staff, great selection, regular whisky tastings and events and it was all 5 miles from my old house in Houston. It is the place that I have tried some of the best whiskies I will ever drink including Glenmorangie 1963 and the most recent Pride release, the site of the first whisky tasting event I organized and led, the place I drank my final 101 World Whisky to Try Before You Die in 2014 and finally where we held our Houston leaving party. The real question is why I didn’t I go more often when I had the chance?
