Balvenie 30 year old

I was a bit underwhelmed by this one.  For the price (which is high) and the fact it is a Balvenie I had high expectations but on the night I tried this for the first time I would say it wasn't even my favorite whisky of the night and it certainly isn't my favorite Balvenie.  The nose was quite modest but still had the Balvenie honey note and the wood was also present.  The taste was smooth had some chocolate, but again the wood for me was dominant with lots spices, oak and even smoke, almost like a mulled wine.  Powerful and rich, and a whisky that showcases what 30 years in wood can do, whether you like that is a matter of personal taste.  For me at least, Balvenie's spirit is better presented in other expressions.
