Highland Park Viking Honour 12 year old

The nose on this is salty and fruity, with some seaweed, a hint of rubber and a prick of alcohol even at 43% ABV.    The taste is rich with toffee, burnt coffee, caramel at first then some more acrid camp fire notes and along with bitter fruit peels and spices.  The finish is gentle hum of heat and peppermint along with some smokiness.  At 43% ABV it can take a drop of water and still hold up, but it doesn't need it.  Overall a delicious expression from one of my favourite distilleries.

    Manhattan Project: Experiment #5

    Written by

    Location: Homemade, Singapore

    Date: December 2015

    Price: NA

Recipe: 2 parts Marker's Mark, 1 part Antica Formula Vermouth

    Garnish: Lemon peel

    Served: Up

Comments: I  recreated the simple recipe I recently tried in Dubai (with no bitters) and a lemon peel garnish.  It worked well.

    Ardbeg Alligator

Also tasted this at Ardbeg Committee meeting in Houston and it was certainly my favorite of the night and perhaps now my favorite Ardbeg.  Will definitely be coming back to this again if I can find it.  The nose has wood smoke rather than peat, lemon peel and is quite sweet but has the tang of salt and even phenol as well.  The taste is very smooth, with lots of sweet fruit and spicy notes.  The finish is oak and drying with peat and smoke.  With a little water I get some lemon notes come through as well.  This has everything, sweetness, spices, oak, peat and all in balance.  Rich and complex this is a special dram.
