Highland Park Viking Honour 12 year old

The nose on this is salty and fruity, with some seaweed, a hint of rubber and a prick of alcohol even at 43% ABV.    The taste is rich with toffee, burnt coffee, caramel at first then some more acrid camp fire notes and along with bitter fruit peels and spices.  The finish is gentle hum of heat and peppermint along with some smokiness.  At 43% ABV it can take a drop of water and still hold up, but it doesn't need it.  Overall a delicious expression from one of my favourite distilleries.

    Jim Beam Rye

I like Jim Beam (well most of it) and I like rye (almost all of it) so how could this go wrong? Answer, it didn’t.   Nice rye nose, not over powering but hints of rye bread and bubblegum. The taste is very sweet at first, caramel and candy floss then fades to reveal burst of spice, pepper and then rye and sweet cola (more Pepsi than Coke) in finish.   Not bad at all but it feels a bit like someone at Jim Beam said “we need a rye to fill out our portfolio, let’s make one” rather than someone just decided to make a great rye. Does that even make sense? It does to me, sort of.
