Woodford Reserve Distillers Select Straight Rye

This bottle was labelled #3031 from Batch 0887 and bottled at 45.2% ABV.  The nose was very nice, herbal tea with mint and sweet vanilla notes.  The mouthfeel is fresh, light and oily, bittersweet on palate with more vanilla, candy, black coffee and dark chocolate.  The finish has peppermint, wood and grassy rye notes.  With water it gets sweeter, even honeyed, while heat builds in the finish with chilli spiced dark chocolate.  Overall very delicious; a light and subtle of straight rye.

    Manhattan Project: Experiment #51

    Written by

    Location: Home, Houston, TX

    Date: April 2020

    Price: Free

Recipe: 50 ml Tullamore DEW, 15 ml Dolin Sweet Vermouth, 5ml Luxardo, dash Orange Bitters

Garnish: Burnt orange peel (website said cherry but I didn't have one)

    Served: Rocks

Comments: Very good, first Irish Manhattan, recipe from Tullamore DEW website.  Orange bitters and Orange peel maybe too much Orange.

    Johnnie Walker Green Label

I have a soft spot for this blended malt.  I was given a bottle as a birthday gift many years before I become really interested in whisky by a colleague who has since passed away.  It turns out that this whisky will also "pass on" soon as it has been annnounced that this line will be discontinued.  Can I suggest they keep this get rid of Black? This nose has raisins, apples and spice, like a baked apple desert.  The taste is sweet caramel, rich and spicy and more than a hint of smoke.  The finish has a drying oakiness and then a quick hit of caramel again right at the end.  Very good and a clear step up from Red and Black in terms of complexity and balance.  I tend to like blended malts (Monkey Shoulder, Sheep Dip, Nikka All Malt) and I like this one.
