Jura Prophecy

I have said it before and I will say it again, I do regret never going to Jura when I had the chance because the more I try their whisky the more I like it.  The label describes this 46% ABV expression as "heavily peated" which might be a slight overstatement, but I did like it and my prophecy is I that will drink this again sometime.     The nose was more smoky than peaty, with lots of citrus peel and dried fruits that also came through in the taste, along with sweet, sugary marmalade - even jammy - notes and a oily, mouthcoating  richness.  Very approachable and morish (moorish?).  The oily, smokey and slightly bitter, burnt wood notes in the finish balance the sweetness well.  If I still rated whiskies with stars this would get some.

    Manhattan Project: Experiment #51

    Written by

    Location: Home, Houston, TX

    Date: April 2020

    Price: Free

Recipe: 50 ml Tullamore DEW, 15 ml Dolin Sweet Vermouth, 5ml Luxardo, dash Orange Bitters

Garnish: Burnt orange peel (website said cherry but I didn't have one)

    Served: Rocks

Comments: Very good, first Irish Manhattan, recipe from Tullamore DEW website.  Orange bitters and Orange peel maybe too much Orange.

Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 year old

This one is hard to find, has limited releases (one liquor store in Texas tells me his allocation is just 4 bottles) and it sells out quicker that a "gangster rapper" with a disney movie contract due to a near cult following, all of which always usually puts me off a whiskey.  However this is good so they are, at least in part, forgiven.  The nose has lots of oak notes, vanilla and some rye.  The mouth feel is light and the taste has more vanilla notes and milk chocolate.  Very smooth, rich and delicious and with rye notes, cayenne and more oak in the finish.
