Highland Park Viking Honour 12 year old

The nose on this is salty and fruity, with some seaweed, a hint of rubber and a prick of alcohol even at 43% ABV.    The taste is rich with toffee, burnt coffee, caramel at first then some more acrid camp fire notes and along with bitter fruit peels and spices.  The finish is gentle hum of heat and peppermint along with some smokiness.  At 43% ABV it can take a drop of water and still hold up, but it doesn't need it.  Overall a delicious expression from one of my favourite distilleries.

Glen Breton Ice 10 year old

Thanks to @Whiskylassie for sending me this interesting sample and I have to say I preferred this expression to Glen Breton’s standard single malt. The nose had cookie dough, buttery shortbread and a sweet citrus note. The high ABV comes through in the taste along with more sweet pastries and vanilla. A little water opens it up and brings out oak and chilli chocolate which helps balance the sweet.   The finish is dry and spicy. Needs the water and the sweet wine influence is clear, but unlike some expressions that hide their spirit behind the wine cask traits there is some balance and malty complexity to this.
