Woodford Reserve Distillers Select Straight Rye

This bottle was labelled #3031 from Batch 0887 and bottled at 45.2% ABV.  The nose was very nice, herbal tea with mint and sweet vanilla notes.  The mouthfeel is fresh, light and oily, bittersweet on palate with more vanilla, candy, black coffee and dark chocolate.  The finish has peppermint, wood and grassy rye notes.  With water it gets sweeter, even honeyed, while heat builds in the finish with chilli spiced dark chocolate.  Overall very delicious; a light and subtle of straight rye.

    Written by

    Location: Refuge, The Woodlands, Texas

    Date: March 2023

    Price: $9.50

Recipe: Not on menu, requested with Makers Mark

    Garnish: Black Cherry

    Served: Rocks

Comments: Great value (might of been Happy Hour as it was after a round of golf).  Second place in a row to ask "big ice" or "lots of little ice".

    Seagram's Seven Crown

This one was a bit of shocker and considering the Seagram's VO was not bad this was a bit of a surprise to me.  The nose (probably it's best feature) has some vanilla, some oak notes and even some banana.  The taste and mouthfeel is at first light with a slight caramel and milk chocolate note, but with an almost metallic tang which is not pleasant.  Some bitter coffee notes but no real depth or richness to this.  The finish is bitter and feels longer than it probably is (like a boring car journey).   Good news... well it does get better with water, the metallic note is gone and it is a little smoother.  Go for the VO or break out the 7-UP and mix a "Seven and Seven".
