Woodford Reserve Distillers Select Straight Rye

This bottle was labelled #3031 from Batch 0887 and bottled at 45.2% ABV.  The nose was very nice, herbal tea with mint and sweet vanilla notes.  The mouthfeel is fresh, light and oily, bittersweet on palate with more vanilla, candy, black coffee and dark chocolate.  The finish has peppermint, wood and grassy rye notes.  With water it gets sweeter, even honeyed, while heat builds in the finish with chilli spiced dark chocolate.  Overall very delicious; a light and subtle of straight rye.

    Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel

The pedants amongst you may note that in the book 101 World Whiskies To Try Before You Die the author Ian Buxton reviewed to the Yamzaki Sherry Cask.  He did however mention the other two expressions in the range (Bourbon Cask and Puncheon) in the book and after many fruitless searches both in person and online (no sherry... fruitless... geddit?) I asked for an officially ruling via Twitter to @101whiskies and Ian's reply on February 11th 2013 was "I think we can allow that!".   The nose has a fresh note, grains and alcohol.  Also a little toasted oak and butter.  The bourbon influence is clear.  The taste has caramel, vanilla, butter pecan with a little heat and some wood notes.  The finish is not long, more spice, charred oak and butter again.  Really good... really showcases the bourbon barrel.
