Woodford Reserve Distillers Select Straight Rye

This bottle was labelled #3031 from Batch 0887 and bottled at 45.2% ABV.  The nose was very nice, herbal tea with mint and sweet vanilla notes.  The mouthfeel is fresh, light and oily, bittersweet on palate with more vanilla, candy, black coffee and dark chocolate.  The finish has peppermint, wood and grassy rye notes.  With water it gets sweeter, even honeyed, while heat builds in the finish with chilli spiced dark chocolate.  Overall very delicious; a light and subtle of straight rye.

The kind people at www.whiskybase.com who supplied me recently with a bottle of Belgian Owl at 76.1% ABV also dropped in this delightful sample which was bottled at a more approachable 46% ABV. I am glad they did. The nose is fruity with vanilla and a nice toasty note. Interestingly the official notes that came with the sample said this expression come from new American Oak (which explains the toast) as well as re-used Bourbon (the vanilla) and Sherry casks (and last but not least the fruit). The taste is sweet caramel and pepper. Balanced and spicy finish with more vanilla and sherry notes coming through with time. Very smooth. Very good.
