My Handcrafted Opinions on Whiskies, Distilleries and Other Related Stuff

Frysk Hynder

My bottle of this Dutch single malt was distilled in ’09 and bottled in ’12 at 40% ABV after maturing in a red wine cask. As you will see in tasting notes the cask had quite a significant, but not unwelcome, influence.  The nose was quite herbal with dried fruits and sweet Port notes. The mouth feel was light but tasty. Some caramel sweetness along with charred wood, tannins, sweet pipe tobacco, raisins and a hint of chocolate. The finish was winey, dry and little spicy. Surprisingly complex (if not very integrated) however very influenced by cask suggesting a lack of confidence in the spirit.
